"It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins." 2 Maccabees 12:46.

Holy Mother Church includes praying for the dead as one of the spiritual works of mercy, and (although the customary month in which we pray for the holy souls is November) praying for the holy souls throughout the year is a good devotion.  This chaplet, based upon a pamphlet entitled "The Rosary for the Dead" from the Archconfraternity of Notre Dame du Suffrage, can help you remember to pray for the holy souls and can help you stay focused while you pray. 

This crochet chaplet has a simple, non-distracting design: a cross, four large beads, and forty small beads.  The suggested prayers are short, allowing the entire chaplet to be prayed in a few minutes. 

Recite the chaplet for your departed loved ones, friends, and companions.  There are also many forgotten souls in Purgatory who need our prayers.

How to Pray the Chaplet

On the cross, pray the De Profundis (Psalm 130) as follows:

Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord:

Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.

If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall stand it.

For with thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of thy law,

I have waited for thee, O Lord. My soul hath relied on his word:

My soul hath hoped in the Lord.

From the morning watch even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord.

Because with the Lord there is mercy: and with him plentiful redemption.

And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

On the large beads say the following prayers: 

Requiem Eternam

Eternal rest grant unto them O, Lord and may perpetual light shine upon them.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed by the mercy of God rest in peace. 

Act of Faith

My God, I believe in Thee, because Thou art Truth itself.

Act of Hope

I hope in Thee, because Thou art infinitely good.

Act of Charity

I love Thee with my whole heart and above all things, because Thou art infinitely perfect; and I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee.

On the small beads of each decade say the following invocation:

Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation.
